Snap_excerpt.pdf

Snap is a fresh and exciting new piece for concert band. It’s contemporary rhythms and harmonies would provide a nice contrast to a program with more traditional repertoire. Performers and audience members alike enjoy its funky and bluesy basslines and riffs. Since it is short and to the point, Snap makes a great concert opener. While its difficulty level is intended for a college band, a community band or advanced high school band can perform this piece well with a little practice. TestoftheWarrior_excerpt

Test of the Warrior is a programmatic concert band piece intended for a middle school band or young high school band. It tells a story of a boy and his journey into manhood. He aspires to be a warrior and sets off on an adventure to battle sorcerers, evil armies, and dragons. During his adventure he discovers a fair maiden who has been held captive in a tower of a castle. He beholds her beauty, embraces her and rescues her. The warrior takes his lady with him as he continues his adventure. The opening and closing “adventure” sections of the song is based on a four note motive that is developed through different rhythms and instrumentation. The second section captures the mysterious but beautiful nature of the fair maiden. The third section highlights a soaring melody that captures the thrill and magic of a romantic embrace.

Verve_excerpt.pdf

Verve (noun)– the spirit and enthusiasm animating artistic composition or performance; vivacity; energy

This piece for full orchestra can best be described by having three distinct energies…each one has increasing vitality. The first energy is organic and beautiful. It grows naturally. The second energy expands. The last energy is full of verve. Contemporary rhythms, changing meters, and interesting harmonies combine to make this an exciting concert piece.
